This is an '''incomprehensive''' list of several multi-system ROM sets and their pros and cons. ==Win3xO==

Win3xO is a attempt to catalog, obtain, and make playable (nearly) every game developed for the Windows 3.x platform. This primarily covers 16 bit games, however due to many late games capable of running on the Win32s extender it does include early 32bit games as well. I strive to find original media rather than using scene rips. This collection uses Windows 3.1 installed within various DosBox versions in order to emulate the OS. All required files are included in the package and all games are preconfigured to run with no configuration required by the user.

==TOSEC== TOSEC is a cataloging/naming system. Their mission is to identify and name all ROMS found in the wild, good dumps, bad dumps, over dumps, hacks, fakes, homebrews, ROMs with even the tiniest byte changed. For example the torrent "TOSEC (TOSEC 2012-12-28) Now Safe Update Pack", has 346 different versions of Super Mario World in it.

==GoodSets/GoodTools== Maintained by Cowering, GoodTools are very similar to TOSEC but slighty more refined. They typically identify the following types dumps (the [ ] brackets and characters within are added to the name of the ROM):

[!] Verified good dump [a] Alternative version [b] Bad dump [f] Fixed dump [h] Hacked ROM [o] Overdumped ROM [p] Pirated version [t] Trained version [!p] Pending dump

Since they are just a cataloging/naming system and not a purification system like No-Intro, Redump, and Trurip, GoodSets contain all of the above types of dumps.

== NonGood == NonGood sets are the ROMs that are not recognized by GoodTools. In other words, ROMs that are not in the GoodSets but could be in the future. This is one of the DAT File collections that Yori Yoshizuki creates and shares.

==No-Intro== What No-Intro does is fill some DAT File, to be used with ROM Managers, with information about the known ROMS released. Often there are more versions of the same ROM dump, but most of them are garbage, some examples may include: bad dumps, hacks, fakes, overdumps, underdumps, and so on. No-Intro lists only the best available ROM; it must be a full dump with no faults and no changes to the file, basically just the ROMS that are the closest as possible to the original licensed cartridges.

== Maybe-Intro == Maybe-Intro is a project dedicated to the preservation and cataloging of ROM hacks and especially the fan translations of video games.

Maybe-Intro is inspired by the No-Intro project. They provide information to identify the good ROM images and eliminate the “garbage” (bad dumps, hacks, fakes, etc.). But there are some treasures among the garbage and the ROM hacking scene deserves to be preserved too. Maybe-Intro aims to testify the same care and love which are already given to the original video game media toward their amateur modification counterparts.

The Maybe-Intro project first intends to preserve the latest version of complete or almost complete fan translations and the best other types of ROM hacks. Thus are provided DAT files to identify the well patched ROM hacks and their original documentation thanks to a ROM manager. There is a DAT file per system and per language of translation and so for the hacks. The original patches are also preserved in the form whose they were released in. Moreover some useful information about the ROM hacking and the emulation can be found on the site.

==Redump== Similiar mission as No-Intro but ''only'' for optical media, also not quite as pure as Trurip: Redump.org is a disc preservation database and internet community dedicated to collecting precise and accurate information about every video game ever released on optical media of any system. The goal is to make blueprints of the data on console and PC game discs. Redump.org also provides guides to ensure the dumps are correctly done. Users of the website who follow the guides correctly are encouraged to share their results to help build the database. Multiple dumps of games with the same serial number by different people are collected to ensure the same results are gathered, which help correct any incorrect dumps in the database as well as to help recognize alternate versions of the same game.

==trurip== Trurip's mission is to have the purist most exact duplicate of the original media. In all forms; optical, magnetic, and cartridge. Now the statement of "the purist most exact duplicate of the original media" may sound very similiar to the goals of No-Intro, it is not. It is another level above that, meaning there are no added headers or tweaks to ensure the games run in emulators properly. Even trurip though can't make a exact duplicate yet in all cases, there are times that things such as the subcode are still missing. It is for sure though the purist of anything out there right now.

== eXoDOS == eXoDOS is my (eXo) attempt to catalog, obtain, and make playable every game developed for the DOS and PC Booter platform. I (eXo) strive to find original media rather than using scene rips. This collection uses a combination of Dosbox and ScummVM to play these older titles on modern systems. Both emulators are included in the torrent and have been setup to run all included titles with no prior knowledge or experience required on the users part.

== Neo Kobe - Japanese computers project == The goal of this project is to organize and preserve software for the Japanese computer systems of the 1980s and early 1990s.

These are the major systems:

  • NEC PC-6001
  • NEC PC-8001
  • NEC PC-8801
  • NEC PC-9801
  • Fujitsu FM-7
  • Fujitsu FM Towns
  • Sharp X1
  • Sharp X68000

These computer systems had thousands of homebrew and doujin software titles.

== Total DOS Collection == TDC brings you the end all, be all, collection of DOS/PC game titles. Every version, every language, every hack and crack, all sorted and renamed in a TOSEC-like manner. Each file cleaned of BBS ads and pirate NFO files, each game virus free and ready to play. We strive to bring the PC DOS platform up to the standards of other full-set archives. This is an ongoing project, where we have started at the dawn of the IBM PC and have been working our way chronologically, attempting to locate and archive every game and edutainment title possible. Naturally, with every subsequent release, the archive will get fuller and more complete, so if you don't see your favorite game here today, you will eventually be patient! This is a big platform! Our release includes our collection of docs, cheats, trainers and other items that we've discovered in our archiving process.

  • How is this different from eXoDOS? It is just raw games - there is no frontend support or screenshots or Dosbox configuration files. This project is more comprehensive than eXoDOS in the extent that we collect every version, every alternate release, shareware, register shareware, Chinese games, Polish games, etc etc.

  • Are there any games here that aren't in eXoDOS? Yes. Eventually everything in eXoDOS will get absorbed into this project by the very nature of this project archiving every game. It's not there yet.

  • Are there any games in eXoDOS that aren't here? (There certainly are, since eXoDOS is bigger?)
Yes. This is an '''ongoing''' project to collect '''every''' PC game that ever existed.
The idea is to make a "fullset" of DOS games. eXoDOS is a different type of project, so they can't really be compared, certainly not by size anyway. eXo's project is for gamers. This is for archivists.
We even include bad/best known copies of games. It's not a competition; eXo and I have been helping each other's projects grow for a few years now.

More details on Total DOS Collection versus eXoDOS.

==ScummVM== ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

For detailed information, read Differences between ScummVM and eXoDOS.

==Rawdump== Rawdump is working mainly in the preservation of optical media discs (CD, DVD). These games are created for true preservation purposes, they are 2448 byte dumps (maindata + subchannels) scrambled with interleaved subs, with included pregap & lead-in (TOC). In other words, these dumps are bit by bit perfect to the original source, currently we are seeking support for the format in mame emulator and also Daemon Tools for easy mounting of the images.
